On September 10th 12pm UTC, CESS (Cumulus Encrypted Storage System) held an AMA with the PolkaWarriors community to introduce the project and answer community members’ questions about topics related to data cloud storage networks, decentralized data storage, etc.
CESS is a decentralized cloud storage network for data storing and sharing. CESS is an open-source, public blockchain intended to be the underlying network infrastructure for decentralized storage needs.
As an open-source public blockchain, CESS securely provides a high-speed and high-throughput storage system widely applicable to enterprises and projects for both Web2 and Web3.
CESS is a full-stack solution built on Substrate (a blockchain SDK framework). CESS supports use cases like Metaverse, NFT, DeFi, and streaming media.
The AMA was held in the PolkaWarriors Telegram group, with the participation of Molly Zhang — Marketing Lead of CESS. The AMA consisted of three sections.
Section 1: CESS picked eight questions from users commenting on the AMA tweet (tweet link) and answered them in the group.
Section 2: Communities members answered ten multiple choices prepared by CESS. CESS picked one winner with the correct answer for each question.
Section 3: CESS picked and answered three questions from the community members.
Section 1
1. What problems is CESS solving, and what are the advantages between CESS and other projects?
Molly: Data security, privacy and data rights ownership are the major issues affecting traditional data cloud storage. For decentralized data storage, the most significant drawbacks are slow data return and network usability. Some projects even experience data loss.
Commercial applications require more data services and powerful performance. CESS ensures data integrity through multi-copy technology and a complete data storage scheme, making data loss that often occurred in IPFS almost impossible.
IPFS’s another common problem is slow data retrieval which does not meet the commercial requirement. CESS innovatively resolved it by assigning two additional miner types, a total of four types of miners to perform the work separately for fast indexing, discovery, and returning data. CESS’s data return speed is measured in milliseconds while other projects take minutes and even hours downloading data. In addition, CESS storage can ensure 99.99% data availability, and plus unlimited network scalability.
CESS’s consensus mechanism solves “Farmer’s Dilemma”, encouraging open and fair participation in a stable and efficient network with clear rewards and punishments scheme. To set us apart from our competitors, we have two core objectives, first is to become the 1st decentralized storage to support enterprise-level businesses, second is to build our own ecosystem.

2. I think a good project is one that will be of great help to the user. So what differentiated features does the team offer as a solution for users to stay and stick with the project?
Molly:
Just to give you guys are short sum up of the main features of CESS:
- Data ownership protection
- Cross-ecosystem, cross-platforms, cross-chain
- Huge monetization opportunities
- Data online sharing platform
- Low gas fee
- Fair & transparent, free from manipulation by big nodes
- Unlimited scalability of the network
- Own ecosystem
- Support web2 and web3, large-scale commercial applications
CESS understands that a full-featured network is only useful when it is easy to use. CESS has its own application layer, apps from Web2 & Web3 can deploy and launch on-chain directly by calling the built-in user-friendly APIs, while supporting EVM and is compatible with WASM. Making integration to the CESS system much easier for any apps and dApps. CESS’s dynamic pricing mechanism guarantees users a competitive price at all times.
CESS is a stable system with data Security & privacy: Data security, sensitive and high-value data protection/uploaded data with multiple backups, sharding encryption, and random decentralized storage by multiple storage miners; even if the node is maliciously attacked, or data is lost or damaged
Data Rights Confirmation: CESS ensures the authenticity and immutability of the data by extracting the metadata of the data and uploading the relevant data to the chain and can provide data validation support for NFT, metaverse, etc.
An efficient network system: The online storage service will not be affected if any single point of failure occurs. It also endows the network with unlimited scalability, allowing the network to meet future market demands.
Meets enterprise-level commercial storage needs both in Web2 & Web3: Individuals or enterprises deploy applications through the built-in intuitive APIs and SDK. Custom API for businesses is also available. CESS network is cross-ecosystem, cross-platform, cross-chain friendly
Unlimited scalability, Cost-effective/ Expandable: Storage space to meet the ever-increasing storage demand; users can purchase cloud storage space on-demand at a competitive price, utilize space effectively, and save costs.
Worry-free Data Sharing: Businesses can grant/deny access to anyone and have the ownership of their data, features enforced by the MDRC & proxy re-encryption mechanism.
Fast data distribution and retrieval: efficiently process “hot data” and “cold data” through indexing and the caching mechanism, ensuring rapid data transmission with retrieval time within seconds or even milliseconds.
3. How is CESS planning to attract users and show that CESS is a tool with better underlying technology and easier, more intuitive development experience? What are the challenges you are trying to solve in the next 6–12 months ?
Molly: We have been building close relationships not only with Polkadot but also with the projects in the ecosystem. To get our first very own and stable clients, we will help offer our storage and data services to all the projects to the Polkdadot communites.
Since CESS is built with Substrate (a SDK- software development kit ), There many other Substrate-based projects currently. CESS is in the process of designing a storage pallet to help developers integrate CESS’s storage services directly into their Substrate-based projects without major code modifications. This pallet will greatly improve the convenience for all Substrate projects to use secure decentralized storage services provided by CESS, synergizing the development of both Substrate and CESS’s ecosystems.
CESS will work with a Broadway show (will be on stage in 2023) for their NFT business including the NFT minting and trading, also selling of show tickets, director’s cut of the show, a documentary of the show. Their NFT application will launch on the CESS network and will become CESS’s native app and a part of CESS ecosystem. We partnered with Hollywood the movie industry, actively engaging with them for the major launch of their NFTs. We are also working through a critical partnership in medical, education fields.

Since CESS is applicable for most applications, our use cases are extensive and our services can be provided to pretty much anyone, both in web2 or web3.
CESS has been custom-built for a wide range of Web3-based use cases. Our challenges will be promoting our project and technologies to more businesses and industries.
4. What is the most ambitious goal of your project? What is the ultimate vision that your project is trying to achieve within the crypto currencies market? I would appreciate it if you could share with us any upcoming updates?
Molly: CESS’s short term goal is to become a leading player in the decentralized storage to support large-scale commercial application. CESS is a full-stack solution, from the bottom layer to the application layer, each layer reflects the strong support for commercial applications.
CESS’s long term goal is to build a robust CESS ecosystem. CESS has a smart contract platform that supports WASM and EVM, allowing crypto-native applications to launch directly on the CESS chain. NFT, blockchain game, and metaverse applications that need decentralized storage can become the native applications of CESS while having technological support from CESS’s underlying infrastructure, helping CESS form an ecosystem. A public chain with its own ecosystem is highly competitive.
5. Could you please tell me just a little more about the team and some of their backgrounds? I have personally seen many projects launch with inexperienced teams?
Molly: Our tech team has a solid background in cloud and cryptographic technologies. There is a technical research paper that is ready to be published by our tech team soon. The background of our team members includes but is not limited to cloud computing and storage, cloud related PaaS and SaaS products research and development, network development, cryptography algorithm implementation and performance optimization; comprehensive knowledge of public chain and development of public chain focusing on the delivery of commercial applications. The members are working across the UK, US, China and India with the commitment of creating a decentralized cloud storage data network for commercial uses.

6. Can you please share a few major milestones that your project has achieved during its development process? I want to know about your strategic investors and well-known partners, as well as the value they bring to your project ecosystem.
Molly:

We will provide a CESS storage pallet for Substrate, all Substrate projects can conveniently use CESS storage service and an important technical technical papers will be published.

7. What are your marketing strategies and how will you have a global expansion and adoption for your project where English is not spoken? What are your next upcoming priorities? What is in your roadmap?

Molly: With the continuous optimization and improvement of the testnet and the upcoming mainnet launch event, CESS has launched a one-year “Pathfinder Campaign” that enables CESS to reach the worldwide Web3 community to build a truly decentralized network. By promoting and sharing CESS’s innovation with a broader audience and having partnerships with more Web3 projects and Web2 businesses across the globe.

CESS just attended the largest blockchain conference Blockchain Rio in Brazil earlier this month in Sep. We will continue our road trip to Columbia, China, Singapore, and Vietnam.
Our next upcoming priority is to get more network contributors around the world, that’s why we will travel the world to promote the project and get ready for our mainnet launch. For countries where English is not their official language, our discord has designated channels for many commonly spoken languages. Check out our discord: https://discord.gg/RaUfBt4B

8. What is the ultimate vision that Your project is trying to achieve within the cryptocurrencies market? Obviously the whole space will experience huge growth in the upcoming years, but what role would you like your project to play in this?
Molly: CESS’s ultimate vision is to build a robust CESS ecosystem. CESS’s high compatibility and DAO governance encourages a diversified CESS ecosystem which creates broader partnership opportunities, granting to the longevity of the project.
Most of the current decentralized storage projects can’t support large-scale and high-volume commercial applications very well. CESS has firmly chosen the decentralized commercial storage track from day one.
CESS firmly believes succeeding in the decentralized commercial storage track will provide CESS more commercial opportunities, generate a stronger cash flow, and gain more profitable monetization opportunities compared to the projects in permanent storage track (i.e. ARWEAVE, SubSpace). As decentralized storage technology becomes mature, CESS will eventually become a popular storage option like AWS and Google cloud. Currently CESS is directly competing with IPFS+FIL, CESS’s goal is to become the strongest player in this market sector.
In the live questions section, Molly answered some short questions from the PolkaWarriors community.
1. Currently, a lot of people are paying attention to NFT, metaverse and games. Can you tell me what advantages you will have in this field in the future?
Molly: With this design in place, CESS has been custom-built for a wide range of Web3-based use cases. These include providing distributed network drive services; the creation of NFT storage and trading platforms; distributed enterprise storage services; and data rights protection since CESS gives data ownership back to users and ensures that data ownership rights, data tracking, data security, and data confirmation are all maintained throughout data transfer cycles and processes.
2. Can you explain how your Tokenomics are distributed? How many tokens will be minted? And how many tokens will be locked by the pool?
Molly: Total 10 billion CESS tokens
55% Miners, linear rating, halved every 4 years
15% Initial Contributors, 6 years linear review
10% Community / DAO / incentive and advertising
10% funding for future development
5% Cooperation Partner, DAO
5% for emergency use and future ecosystem development
CESS incentivizes network contributors/miners and community members fairly in order to build an efficient data storage network. There are four types of miners in the CESS network: storage capacity miners, consensus miners, cache miners, and retrieval miners. Miner rewards are calculated fairly and meticulously, and are proportional to storage space, computational power and other runtime factors.
