First GEAR workshop in Russia

There’s nothing better than getting together and writing smart contracts on a Friday night, right?

Last week, we held the first GEAR workshop at the Higher School of Economics in Moscow. Students from the computer science department gathered to listen to guest speakers and learn how to write their first smart contracts.

HSE Students

The workshop started with a talk from Nikolay Volf, Founder & CEO of GEAR and ex-core developer of Polkadot, where he shared knowledge about smart contracts, clearly explaining what they are and how they work. Later, Shamil Yakoupov, a Rust developer with over twenty years of experience developing software, gave a presentation where the students learned about the Polkadot and Kusama ecosystems, Web 3.0, WebAssembly and the advantages of programming in Rust.

After these impactful talks, the students put their newly found knowledge into practice, with each individual writing their first smart contracts — all in under five minutes! The amazing work from the students deserved to be rewarded, so everyone received a bounty, our bonus tokens, which would later be exchanged for native GEAR tokens.

This workshop was truly special and we are super grateful to the Higher School of Economics for giving us the opportunity to meet their amazing students. And still to this day, we look forward to meeting the next generation of programmers.

Which is why we’re excited to announce that in October, several more workshops will take place in the United States.

This will enable us to introduce our technology to some of the most talented student developers in America and spread awareness about the next iteration of blockchain technology.
