Introduction

Moonbeam is an Ethereum-compatible smart contract platform on the Polkadot network that makes it easy to build natively interoperable applications. This Ethereum compatibility allows developers to deploy existing Solidity smart contracts and DApp frontends to Moonbeam with minimal changes. As a parachain on the Polkadot network, Moonbeam will benefit from the shared security of the Polkadot relay chain and integrations with other chains that are connected to Polkadot. Currently in active development by PureStake, Moonbeam is expected to reach MainNet by mid-2021.

History

PureStake is the company that develops the Moonbeam smart contract platform. The PureStake team started the Moonbeam project in January 2020 to face cross-chain interoperability challenges by providing a simpler way to deploy apps to Polkadot, using a smart contract approach.

In July 2020, Moonbeam was awarded a W3F grant for Substrate-based Ethereum compatibility features, and later on the year, in September, the team launched the Moonbase Alpha TestNet.

The team is currently working on the technology that will enable Ethereum compatibility. The estimated launch for the Moonriver Network is in late Q2, and the Moonbeam network will be launched in mid-2021.

Project Highlight

Moonbeam is the easiest on-ramp for building an application on Polkadot.

As an Ethereum-compatible smart contract platform, Ethereum developers can use popular Ethereum developer tools to build or redeploy their Solidity projects to a Moonbeam.

Moonbeam is built on Substrate (the framework underlying Polkadot) and will be a parachain on that network as well as its BetaNet “cousin” network, Kusama.

Because of this focus on Ethereum compatibility, Moonbeam is able to deliver a better user experience for Solidity developers:

• Minimal Changes Needed: If you have an existing contract, there’s No need to rewrite or reconfigure your smart contracts. They'll work right away.

• Familiar Languages: write smart contracts in Solidity or anything that compiles to Solidity bytecode.

• Existing Tools and dApp Front-Ends: connect popular tools like MetaMask, Remix, and Truffle via a complete set of Web3 RPC endpoints. Use well known Javascript libraries such as Web3.Js or Ethers.Js.

• Unified Accounts, Addresses, and Signatures: use your existing Ethereum H160 accounts & ECDSA signatures to interact with Moonbeam.

Publish-Subscribe Capabilities: subscribe to contract events and updates about on-chain transactions, balances, and more.
